Screen Reader Training

Description

Participants will gain valuable insight and knowledge of concepts and skills to use the JAWS screen reader to navigate the Windows operating system, read and edit text and browse web pages.


Location

In person/hybrid at OCALI. 470 Glenmont Ave., Columbus, OH 43214. Room 305.


Audience

  • Paraprofessionals working with students who are potential or current braille users, particularly young, newly blind, or cognitively limited students
  • County Boards of Developmental Disabilities staff working with students who are potential or current braille users
  • Other school staff working with students who are potential or current braille users
  • Parents and family of children who are potential or current braille users
  • Braille users

Objectives

Participants will:

  • gain an understanding of the skills and concepts for using a screen reader.
  • learn the JAWS user interface, including: menus, dialog boxes, utilities, and adjusting speech output.
  • learn how to use JAWS with Windows, including: navigating the start menu, navigating the desktop, and opening and closing programs.
  • learn file management, including: creating, saving, and opening files, inputing and reviewing text, and changing typing echo.
  • learn how to use the keyboard to read and edit text, including: moving the cursor by character, word, line and sentence, selecting text by character, word line, paragraph, select all, and editing keyboard shortcuts.
  • get an introduction to using the internet, including: opening a web page, completing a search, using navigation quick keys to navigate a web page, filling out forms, and navigating HTML elements.
  • learn about JAWS and refreshable braille, including: connecting a braille display, exploring braille settings, and braille commands.

Participant Receives

One single-user license of JAWS (1 year).

This training is limited to the first 15 participants to register. Classes fill-up fast, so don't delay signing up!
