12-Week Blended Braille Course

Description

This 12-week online Basic Braille course will provide an opportunity to improve braille skills, while addressing the needs of students who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind. Knowledge of the braille alphabet is a plus. The course will introduce the braille alphabet, capitalization, paragraphing, punctuation, cardinal numbers, one-cell whole-word contractions, whole-word contractions, part-word contractions, ordinal numbers, whole-word lower sign contractions, part-word lower sign contractions, short-form words, and some formatting. Students will participate in independent and group work and will apply their knowledge as they read and write with a Perkins Brailler and/or Perky Duck and proofread literary braille materials.

Audience

Educators and others who work with students who use braille

  • Educators working with students who are potential or current braille users,

  • Additional professional and paraprofessional school staff working with students who are potential or current braille users

  • Parents and family of children who are potential or current braille users


Learning Objectives

The student will demonstrate: 

  • The ability to read and write braille alphabet with a Perkins Brailler.

  • Knowledge of braille numbers, punctuation, and braille contractions.

  • Increased braille literacy skills.

  • Understanding of UEB changes.


Contact Hours

Eighteen (18) contact hours will be offered for completion of the course


BEST Grant will provide the following materials

  • Ashcroft's Programmed Instruction: UEB
  • Companion Reader for Ashcroft's Programmed Instruction

Please note that BEST can only provide materials to participants living or working in the state of Ohio.


Participant Provides

  • Brailler
  • Braille paper
  • Their own computer if participating online
  • Perky Duck downloaded on computer

  • Training is limited to the first 20 participants to register
  • Registration deadline: Feb. 7th, 2024
