The BEST Grant in collaboration with the AT & AEM Center, American Council of the Blind of Ohio (ACBO), Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI), the Ohio Center for Deafblind Education (OCDBE) and the Ohio State School for the Blind (OSSB) invite teachers, braillists, and support staff of students with visual impairments to attend Scanning for Braille, Large Print and Audio training.

Description

This workshop will provide training in the use of ABBYY FineReader, an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program used to convert the images of printed documents into electronically editable text. Microsoft Word will be used to demonstrate clean-up methods and for formatting braille and large print.

Day 1: Thursday, September 6

Through discussion and demonstration, the participants will learn about:

  • Scanners: what to buy or what to use;
  • Optical character recognition (OCR) software what to use and when;
  • Scanning documents – what settings to use and why;
  • Abbyy FineReader settings for converting text images into editable electronic text;
  • Image editing tools in Abbyy FineReader;
  • Automatic Vs manual OCR;
  • Using MS Word for file cleanup;
  • Recording a simple macro using Word’s macro recorder;
  • Template scanning – OCR an entire novel ready for formatting in braille or large print in less than one hour

Day 2: Friday, September 7

Through discussion and demonstration, the participants will learn about:

  • Accessing text in PDF files with limited security settings.
  • Cleaning up downloaded text files;
  • Converting DAISY files for braille, large print or audio;
  • Producing audio files using Balabolka (a free program)
  • Creating large print and onscreen reading files using a MS Word template and macros;
  • Moving large print (digital text) files to tablet devices

Software provided

The BEST Grant will provide a current version/upgrade of ABBYY FineReader software to participants who attend to take back to their school district/agency (one copy per district/agency) to produce materials.


Participant Preparation for the Workshop

Participants who are currently using OCR software are encouraged to bring scanned documents which have presented difficulty in either scanning, OCR, or cleanup. Files must be in electronic form (either images or as image-based PDF files).

Microsoft Word will be used extensively during the workshop and participants are encourage to be familiar with Word 2010, 2013 or 2016.

Participants are encouraged to bring a USB flash memory (thumb-drive) with at least 1 or more gigabytes of free space. There will be items you will want to take home.
