Using Large Print Templates and Macros to Produce Large Print and Electronic Text

As part of the AT&AEM Center's goals to support the production of quality accessible materials for students who are blind and visually impaired, we are offering a training focused on creating large print materials. This online 4-session training will provide comprehensive training on a collection of templates and macros for Microsoft Word for producing braille and large print for paper or electronic devices such as iPads or computers. The templates and macros are limited to Windows versions of Microsoft Word (versions 2013, or 2016, 2019, and 365). Participants will receive the templates and macros for use at home or school or for commercial large print production.
Beginning Nemeth (4 session course)

The Beginning Nemeth Course will introduce the basic Nemeth Code for math and science notation. This course will cover the Nemeth Code notation appropriate for kindergarten to middle school curricula. Students will participate in independent and group work via video conferencing and will apply their knowledge as they read, write, and proofread math and science materials. The course consists of three online sessions with additional, short reinforcement activities to be completed independently between. Students will use 6-key input to produce braille materials. The course will be appropriate for students with little or no Nemeth experience. The course will also include examples following current recommendations for the use of Nemeth Code in the UEB setting.
Beginning Braille (3 session course)

The Beginning Braille Course will provide basic, initial instruction in braille for paraprofessionals, parents, and teachers and is not intended to be a refresher for the experienced braille user. The course will introduce/review the braille alphabet, capitalization, punctuation, cardinal numbers, one-cell whole-word contractions, whole-word contractions, part-word contractions, and some short-form words, all according to UEB (Unified English Braille). This course will also introduce simple formatting. The course consists of three online sessions with additional, short reinforcement activities to be completed independently between. Students will participate in independent and group work via group video conferencing and will apply their knowledge as they read and write using 6-key input and proofread literary braille materials.
Advanced Braille (3 session course)

This course is designed for educators who need advanced instruction in contracted Unified English Braille (UEB) and the formats in which it is transcribed. The course consists of three hybrid and/or online sessions with additional assignments to be completed independently between. The course will briefly review the content of the lessons one through six and provide in-depth coverage of lessons seven through nineteen of the NLS Braille Transcribing Course, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Library of Congress. Students will be using a combination of methods including lecture, hands-on braille writing using 6-key input, tactile readings, games involving reading braille, independent work, and group work via video conferencing as they apply their knowledge to read, write, and proofread literary braille materials.
