Converting Math Into Braille: MathType & Mathpix Training


Description

As part of the AT&AEM Center’s goal to support the implementation of braille instruction and braille technology, we are offering professional development training focused on Mathpix and MathType software. The instructors will facilitate the session with a hands-on learning platform. The training is open to educators and support staff serving students with visual impairments at no cost.

Audience

Educators, transcribers and others who work with students who use Nemeth braille code in the UEB setting.  


Learning Objectives

Participants will demonstrate:

  • Entering text and math into Word using Mathpix. 
  • Converting or entering math into MathML using MathType. 
  • Using Duxbury math codes in the Word setting. 
  • Producing proper Nemeth Code math braille in the UEB setting by importing formatted Word documents into Duxbury. 

Agenda

Topic 1: Preparing Materials 

      • Configuring Word to allow for easy identification of MathML
      • Applying Word BANA template for Nemeth using SWIFT
      • Removing automatic numbers/bullets and tabs

Topic 2: Using MathPix

      • General MathPix features
      • Math problems only
      • Marh with text
      • Math from handwriting
      • Math from mobile device pictures

Topic 3: Using MathType

      • MathType introduction & overview including enhancement of visual appearance
      • MathType to input math into Word including shortcut keys and practice 
      • Using MathType to convert math from Word Equation Editor
      • Correcting MathML in MathType

Topic 4: Putting It All Together

      • Duxbury Math Codes
      • Special cases including problem math topics and document types
      • Reading and correcting translated braille

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Nemeth Code and formatting in Word for Duxbury Braille translation (familiarity with BANA Braille template operation)


Contact Hours

Three (3) contact hours will be offered.


Materials Provided

Computers with the needed software and files will be provided to Ohio participants as available for use during the training. Computers will be provided to participants in order of registrations.

If you are unable to receive a computer, you will need the following to participate fully:

  • Duxbury
  • Microsoft Word with the SWIFT add-on
  • MathType
  • Mathpix
