Learning Through Play with LEGO® Braille Bricks

Description
A hands-on session designed for educators who support students with visual impairments. LEGO® Braille Bricks is a playful tool to teach braille to visually impaired students ages 4 and up. The kit comprises of colorful LEGO® bricks that have both print and braille letters or symbols on them, allowing the sighted and visually impaired students to interact and play on equal terms. This session will demonstrate the use of the bricks and provide resources on how to implement them in an educational setting.

Audience
Professionals working with students who are blind or visually impaired
Objectives
Through discussion, demonstration, and small group activities, participants will:
- Participants will learn the content of a LEGO® Braille Bricks Kit
- Participants will learn the 5 characteristics of playful experiences that the LEGO® Braille Bricks learning activities are based on.
- Participants will learn about resources for LEGO® Braille Brick activities for prebraille and braille users.
- Participants will learn how to request a LEGO® Braille Brick Kit
Agenda
- The principles of learning-through-play to visually impaired children
- Concept of braille bricks and learn about resources for activities
- Hands-on activities with the bricks for various stages of learning: pre-braille, basic-braille, braille
- Requesting a kit
Contact Hours
Two and a half (2.5) contact hours will be offered for full participation.
